Today was the first day of summer research in the Moss Lab, starting off completely online for the first time ever. I will post later this week about the awesome students and our plans for summer research activities. But today the only thing that feels appropriate is acknowledging that we begin this work several months into a global pandemic that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and continues to lay bare the deep inequities that exist in societies across the globe, but particularly in our own country. And now we are mere days into a nationwide uprising of grief and anger following yet another killing of an unarmed black person. I commit to continue confronting the ways that I fall short as an ally and an anti-racist, to working alongside those who seek structural changes to address rampant inequity and racism, and to creating scientific and educational communities that are inclusive and welcoming and supportive of the health and welfare of all members.
