Summer 2021 research interns featured on the @whitmancollege socials this week! We are so grateful to be vaccinated and working together in person this summer 🌱🌽🧬🧫🧪🌈
Today was the first day of summer research in the Moss Lab, starting off completely online for the first time ever. I will post later this week about the awesome students and our plans for summer research activities. But today the only thing that feels appropriate is acknowledging that we begin this work several months into a global pandemic that has claimed hundreds of thousands of lives and continues to lay bare the deep inequities that exist in societies across the globe, but particularly in our own country. And now we are mere days into a nationwide uprising of grief and anger following yet another killing of an unarmed black person. I commit to continue confronting the ways that I fall short as an ally and an anti-racist, to working alongside those who seek structural changes to address rampant inequity and racism, and to creating scientific and educational communities that are inclusive and welcoming and supportive of the health and welfare of all members.
Congratulations, Whitman Moss Lab (and affiliated) graduates!! In normal circumstances we would be out in the warm May sunshine celebrating your accomplishments, and I would get to meet each of your families and brag about how awesome you are and take lots of pictures together. But instead we find ourselves celebrating virtually today. So please consider this post an acknowledgment of your many achievements over these last 4 years and of my deep gratitude for getting to be part of your Whitman education. I hope you are each celebrating with loved ones today!!
During lunch today, I watched the @americanexperiencepbs documentary on Norman Borlaug, a Nobel Peace Prize winning agronomist who revolutionized wheat breeding and agricultural practices in an effort to tackle world hunger. The film covers his life and work, as well as the sociopolitical mise-en-scene of the 1940s-1970s when he was most active. It also touched briefly on the complicated legacy of the “Green Revolution” and industrial agriculture. The story was a valuable reminder of what science/scientists can accomplish for the world, as well as the ways in which those in power can use science/scientists in service of their own goals. #normanborlaug #lunchtimedocumentary #ilovepickledcarrots
This morning I got to watch a cool pair of presentations on mechanobiology in the @plantbiology @plantae_org seminar series! Liz Haswell from @wustl_official shared her lab’s work on ion channels that are activated when cell membranes become deformed, and Naomi Nakayama from @imperialcollege presented her group’s work on unraveling how dandelion seeds “fly” 🌱👩🏻‍🔬📈 #womeninscience #womxninscience #plantbiology #plantscience #7amscience
